Chapter 5: November 20,2021

Chapter 5: Jesus Teaches Us About Love

Opening Prayer - Hail Mary

Vocabulary: Commandments - laws or rules given to us by God

Background:

  • When Jesus lived on Earth, he often used stories to teach people about God's message of love.

  • These stories were small simple stories that showed people how to love God and how to love others.

  • Since these stories helped people, many people wanted to be friends with Jesus.

  • Read Along: Do you like to make new friends? Why or why not?

We Believe:

  • Many people wanted to follow Jesus.

    • When Jesus taught, crowds of people would come to hear him.

    • The people needed him to:

      • Make them feel better.

      • Teach them to pray.

      • Tell them the Good News about God's love.

      • Tell them how to live a better life.

    • After spending time with Jesus, people came to know what God's love was like.

    • Jesus made everyone feel special.

    • Question: How can you spend time with Jesus?

      • Pray

      • Listen to a story about Jesus.

      • Share Jesus's live with others.

    • When we wake up in the morning, we an pray to God. This shows how important God is to us. There are special prayers we say to offer God our whole day. We call these prayers morning offerings. You can say this prayer as a morning offering: “My God, I offer you today and all I think and do and say.”

  • Jesus taught the Great Commandment.

    • Commandments are laws or rules given to us by God.

    • These laws help us to live as God wants.

    • Jesus taught us the Great Commandment:

Jesus Said: "You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind. You shall love your neighbor as yourself."

  • When we follow this commandment, we love God, ourselves, and others.

  • We show God our love when we.

    • Do what God wants us to do.

    • Pray to God everyday.

  • Jesus taught us to love God, ourselves, and others.

    • When we learn about Jesus's teaching, we learn about love.

    • We show God we love ourselves when we take care of ourselves.

    • Jesus cared for all people. He listened to people's problems.

    • He wants us to act as he acted.

    • We do this when we love God, ourselves, and others.

    • Jesus showed us how to love people by:

    • Being kind

    • Listening to other people’s problems

    • Caring for people

    • Jesus wants us to act as he acted. When we do this we show our love to God, ourselves and others.

  • Jesus taught us that all people are our neighbors

    • After Jesus taught the Great Commandment, someone asked who our neighbors are; and he told us this story: (Listen to the Read Along)

    • Which man was a good neighbor and why?

    • We call him the good Samaritan because he cared and helped the hurt man.

    • Jesus helps us to understand:

    • That all people are our neighbors

    • We are to be good neighbors to everyone

  • Ending prayer: Our Father; Glory Be

November 13, 2021: Chapter 4

Chapter 4: Jesus Works Among the People

Opening Prayer: Hail Mary

Vocabulary:

  • Trust - To believe in someone’s love for us

  1. Chapter Story

  • Listen to the story and then answer the following:

  • What are some of the ways that you and your family make guests feel welcomed?

  • How do people welcome you into their home

  1. We Believe

  • We Believe that John the Baptist helped people to get ready for Jesus.

    • John the Baptist was the cousin of Jesus!

    • When John grew up, he became one of God's helpers.

    • John went around and told everyone that they should put God first in their lives.

    • Question: What are some ways to put God first in your life?

    • God gave John an important message to share. John wanted the people to know that Jesus is the person God promised to send. He also wanted them to know that  they would soon be able to see and hear this person. They could get ready by sharing and by being kind and fair to others.

    • Many people heard John's message and this helped the people get ready to welcome Jesus, the Son of God, into their lives.

    • Here are some ways that we can welcome Jesus:

      • Share with our friends

      • Say our prayers

      • Be fair when we Play

      • Saying “Please” and “Thank you”

      • Help my family at home

  • We believe Jesus shared God's love with all people.

    • Jesus went from town to town teaching people.

    • He told them about God.

    • Jesus treated all people with respect.

    • He shared the news of God's love with everyone.

    • Read Along: Let's read about the story of Zacchaeus and how Jesus reacted to Zacchaeus.

    • Now some people did not like Zacchaeus because since he used to work as a tax collector he used to steal a lot money from other people. However, Jesus still invited himself to Zacchaeus’ home and showed him God’s love.

    • Zacchaeus was very happy that Jesus was coming to his house.

    • Jesus knew that Zacchaeus needed to hear the news of God’s love.

  • We believe Jesus teaches that God watches over us and cares for us.

    • Read along: Let’s read about what Jesus says about God caring for us and other.

    • When Jesus said this to the people he wanted people to understand that God who takes care of the birds, would take care of us even more.

    • God loves and takes care of us even when we do not know it.

    • When we believe someone loves us, we trust them.

    • Jesus tells us to trust God.

    • Whenever God provides for us and takes care of us, we have to thank God. We do this by praying to him.

    • As Catholics we all need a quiet place to talk to God in prayer. When we pray we can praise God, we can thank God, and we can ask God for help.

  • We believe Jesus helped all those in need.

    • Jesus comforted people who were sad or afraid.

    • He helped people who were poor or hungry and he healed people who were sick.

    • Read Along: Let’s read a story about Jesus helping people in need.

    • People often came to Jesus with problems they needed help on and Jesus would help all of those who needed him.

    • In this story, Jesus healed two blind men simply because they believed Jesus could heal them.

  • Jesus loves his mother and wants us to love her too!

  • Because Mary married a man named Joseph, Joseph would be Jesus' foster father.

  • Mary and Joseph lived in Nazareth which was far away from the city of Bethlehem where Jesus was born.

    • During this time, there was a new law passed and Mary and Joseph had to travel all the way from Nazareth to Bethlehem.

    • Since it was very far away, they had to travel by walking and by riding on a donkey.

    • Eventually Mary and Joseph arrived at Bethlehem and soon after Jesus was born!

    • We call the day of Jesus' Birth, Christmas!

We Believe:

  • Jesus lived in Nazareth with Mary and Joseph.

  • We call Jesus, Mary and Joseph the Holy Family.

  • This Holy Family obeyed God the Father and prayed to him.

    • Jesus, Mary and Joseph believed in the one, true God.

    • They loved God very much and they obeyed God’s Laws.

    • The Holy Family prayed Every morning and every night.

    • They even joined other Jewish families for prayer each week. Think of it like us going to mass!

  • Just like the Holy Family, we have to pray to God everyday.

    • When should we pray to God?

      • We can pray to God when we wake up.

      • We can pray to God when we go to bed.

      • We can pray to God when we go to mass.

      • We can also pray to God before we eat. When we pray before we eat we can say this prayer:

Bless us, O Lord and these your gifts which we are about to receive from your goodness. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Ending Prayer: 1 Hail Mary/ 1 Glory Be
