April 23, 2022: Chapter 23

Chapter 23: We Celebrate the Mass

Opening Prayer: Hail Mary

Background: What are some ways you welcome people?

We Gather to Worship to God

  • Each week, we gather as a parish for Mass to praise and give thanks to God.

  • The mass is the Church’s greatest celebration.

  • Mass has two major parts: The Liturgy of the Word and The Eucharist

  • The mass begins as we stand sing and welcome one another

  • The priest begins with the sign of the cross

  • Then we ask God and others for forgiveness

We listen to God’s Word

  • The bible is the book of God’s Word.

  • During the Liturgy of the word, we listen to three readings from the Bible:

    • First reading is from the Old Testament and it’s about God’s people who lived before Jesus Christ was born.

    • The second reading is from the New testament and it is about the teachings of the Apostles.

    • After the first and second reading, the reader will say “The Word of the Lord.” and we answer, “Thanks be to God.”

    • The third reading is the Gospel reading and the reading is taken from one of the four Gospels in the New Testament. During this time we stand and sing words of praise (Alleluia). The Gospel is the Good News about Jesus Christ and his teachings. This reading is done by a priest or a deacon.

    • After the gospel, the reader will say “The Gospel of the Lord,” and we respond with “Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.”

    • After the Gospel, the priest or deacon will give a homily. The Homily helps us to apply God’s words to our everyday lives.

    • After the Homily, the priest walks back to the Altar and we all stand. Then we recite the Nicene Creed.

    • We end the first part of the mass (Liturgy of the word) with the Prayer of the Faithful for the church and the world.

    • The response for each Prayer is, “Lord hear our prayer.”

Our gifts of bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ

  • The second part of the Mass (The Eucharist) begins as the altar and the gifts are prepared. Usually two or three parishioners offer these gifts to the priest by bringing them up to the altar

    • The altar is the table of the Lord.

    • The priest along with the altar servers prepare the altar for the celebration of the Eucharist.

    • After everything is prepared, the priest says the Eucharistic prayer. During this prayer the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ.

    • In Order for this to happen the priest says:

    • Priest takes the bread and says the word of Jesus: “Take this all of you, and eat of it, for this is my body, which will be give up for you” (At this point the host becomes the Body of Christ)

    • Pries takes the chalice which has the cup of wine and says the word of Jesus “Take this, all of you, and drink from it, for this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins, do this in memory of me” (At this point the wine now becomes the blood of Christ)

We grow closer to Jesus and one another

  • We prepare ourselves to receive Jesus by:

    •  praying the Our Father

    • sharing the sign of peace

    • Asking Jesus for forgiveness and peace

  • Now the priest invites us to share the Eucharist (Communion)

    • The people who have received the sacrament of first Holy Communion receive the Body and Blood of Christ.

    • The Priest says “The body of Christ” and our response is “Amen”

    • The priest says “The blood of Christ” and we respond with “Amen”

When you say the word “Amen” you are saying “I believe”

  • Before receiving Jesus in the Eucharist we make sure that our relationship with him is strong (Free of sin)

  • While everyone is receiving communion, we sing songs of thanks to show that we are joined with Jesus and the church

  • After receiving Communion everyone quietly returns to their seats and we quietly pray.

  • To conclude the mass, the priest gives us the blessing and we are sent out to love as Jesus’ followers.

April 9, 2022: Chapters 21 and 27

 Chapter 21: Triduum

(The Three Days)

Chapter 27: Easter

May 11, 2020

Starting Prayer: 1 Our Father, 1 Hail Mary

Background:

  • What is Lent? (Period of preparation before Easter)

  • What do we get ready to celebrate during Lent? (Jesus' death and resurrection)

  • When does Lent begin? (Ash Wednesday)

  • When does Lent End? (Holy Thursday)

We Gather

  • Where do you see crosses in your day? (Home, book, Mass, rosary, etc.)

  • Crucifix: is a cross that has the body of Jesus on it.

We Believe:

  • At the end of Lent, we celebrate The Three Days before Easter which are: Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday.

  • Holy Thursday - Jesus’ Last supper with his Apostles

    • the washing of the feet:

      • The night before he got betrayed, he gathered his disciples to eat together his last supper.

      • During supper, Jesus wrapped a towel around his waist, filled a basin with water and one by one began to wash the feet of the disciples.

      • One disciple called Simon Peter, told Jesus that Jesus should not wash his feet. But Jesus told Simon Peter that if he could not wash his feet then he would not be able to have a relationship with God. So Simon Peter said to Jesus, "Master, then not only my feet, but my hands and head as well." Jesus told Simon Peter that since Simon Peter is already clean(Pure), just cleaning his feet is enough.

      • Question: Why did Jesus clean everyone's feet?

      • Question: Why did Jesus say that to Simon Peter?

      • Answer: Since Jesus is the Teacher of the disciples, he is the most respected of all of them, but Jesus did such an embarrassing thing. He showed humility and told the disciples that if he could do it, so can the disciples. It is to show everyone that no one is better than anyone else and that you should always be willing to help other people or to give service to other people.

    • The Body and Blood of Christ

      • At the Last Supper, Jesus took the bread that was shared between the disciples, broke it and gave it to his disciples saying, "Take this all of you and eat of it. For this is my body which will be given up for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me."

      • He then took the wine and passed it to all the disciples saying, "Take this all of you and drink from it. For this is the chalice of my blood. Blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me."

      • Question: Does this sound familiar to you? Where did you hear it before?

      • This was the first communion ever.

  • Good Friday: The day of Jesus's Death

    • Jesus went through a lot of suffering and a lot of torture before he was crucified on the cross.

    • This is also known as the Passion of Jesus.

  • Holy Saturday/ Easter Vigil

    • This is a time of waiting and praying for Jesus to come back to life.

    • When Jesus comes back to life, it is known as the Resurrection.

    • During the Easter Vigil Mass, it begins with the church being completely dark. The priest starts by lighting the paschal candle (the big candle) and using it to light everyone else's candle.

    • These candles are used to show that Jesus came back to life and is back to help us get rid of our sins.

Chapter 27: Easter

Question: What are some ways that we celebrate Easter?

Question: How do we help other people celebrate Easter?

  • During Easter we celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus.

    • The Resurrection of Jesus is when he came back to life after being killed on the cross.

    • We celebrate Easter for 50 days from Easter Sunday to Pentecost Sunday.

    • It is also sometimes called “the Great Sunday” by St. Athanasius because it is the most important sunday of the entire year.

    • Because of Jesus’ death and resurrection, we are freed from sins.

  • The story of Easter

    • After Jesus died on the cross, he was taken down and placed in a tomb that was then covered by a big stone that takes a lot of strength to move.

    • Every day, the ladies of Galilee, would visit Jesus to put perfume on his body.

    • One day, Mary Magdalene visited the tomb early in the morning and saw that the stone was removed from the tomb, Thinking that Jesus’ body was stolen, she went running and told Simon Peter.

    • Simon Peter and the other disciples, ran to the tomb and they found the burial cloths that were used to cover Jesus.

    • An angel then appeared to Mary Magdalene and the disciples and told them that Jesus is no longer dead and that he was raised from the dead, The angel told them to go tell others that they will see Jesus soon.

  • After Easter Sunday we also celebrate Jesus’ ascension and Pentecost.

    • Ascension is when Jesus goes to Heaven in body and spirit and he returns to God the Father.

    •  Pentecost is when the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles in the form of fire and gave them special gifts.

  • Question: What decorations do you see at Easter time?

    • We typically see baby bunnies, baby chicks, eggs, flowers, etc.

    • Since Easter is at the beginning of Spring, we see signs of new life around us! Such as flowers blooming, chicks breaking out of their eggs, and butterflies breaking out of their cocoons.

    • These are all signs of new life! Just like Jesus’ and our new life in him!

Ending Prayer: 1 Hail Mary, 1 Glory Be.

April 2, 2022: Chapter 22

Chapter 22: Jesus Gives the Eucharist

Opening Prayer: Our Father

Background

  • What are some things people do to celebrate holidays?

  • When we celebrate holidays we remember special days or events.

  • For example, during Christmas we remember the birth of Jesus; during Easter we remember the death of Jesus; and during thanksgiving we celebrate all the things and people we are thankful for.

  • There are also some holidays that the Catholic church celebrates such as Ash Wednesday or Holy Thursday.

  • These church holidays (or Holy Days) help us celebrate and remember what we learned about our Catholic faith.

  • One important holiday that we remember every sunday during mass is Holy Thursday

We Believe

  • On the night before he died, Jesus was with his followers in Jerusalem and shared a special meal with them.

    • While they were eating, Jesus picked up the bread. He blessed it and broke it. He gave it to his friends. He said, “Take and Eat this is my body.”

    • Then Jesus took a cup of wine. He gave God thanks. He passed the cup to his friends and said, “Drink from it, all of you, for this is my blood”

  • Where have you heard these words before?

  • This special meal is known as the Last Supper and here Jesus gave us the gift of himself in the form of bread and wine which becomes the body and blood of Christ.

We Celebrate what Jesus said and did at the Last Supper.

  •  When Jesus did that, he told his disciples, “do this in memory of me.”

  • We remember this Last Supper at the celebration of the Eucharist.

    • Eucharist means to give thanks

    • We give thanks to God for the gifts He gives us and to Jesus for everything he has done for us.

  • The Eucharist is the sacrament of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ

  • In this sacrament, the bread and wine becomes the Body and blood of Jesus Christ

We Celebrate the Sacrament of the Eucharist

  • The Mass is the Church’s greatest celebration

  • At mass we

    • Worship god as a parish

    • Praise the Father for his love

    • Celebrate the life of Jesus

  • Jesus is always with us at mass. He is with us when:

    • We gather together

    • We listen to God’s word

    • We remember what Jesus said and did at the Last Supper (the Eucharist)

    • We share his Body and Blood

We Join our Parish for the celebration of Mass

  • How many of you are attending mass?

  • Every Saturday evening and on Sunday’s we gather as a parish to celebrate Mass.

  • The priest leads us throughout the whole mass

  • During Mass we participate when we:

    • Sing

    • Pray

    • Listen to God’s Word

  • Then the priest does what Jesus did at the Last Supper:

    • Priest takes the bread and says the word of Jesus: “Take this all of you, and eat of it, for this is my body, which will be give up for you” (At this point the host becomes the Body of Christ)

    • Priest takes the chalice which has the cup of wine and says the word of Jesus “Take this, all of you, and drink from it, for this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins, do this in memory of me” (At this point the wine now becomes the blood of Christ)

  • What can you do to take part in the celebration of Mass?

March 26, 2022: Chapter 19

Chapter 19- We Celebrate God's Forgiveness

Opening Prayer: 1 Hail Mary

Background

  • What happens when we are baptized? (Our sins are forgiven and we are given the freedom to live as children of God)

  • Sometimes we use this freedom to make wrong choices. These choices will sometimes hurt others and yourselves. But it also causes our relationship with God to get weaker. These wrong choices are called sins.

    • Mortal sin: mortal sin is a big sin that breaks your relationship with God.

    • Ex: Disrespecting your mom and dad

    • Venial sin: venial sin is a small sin that weakens your relationship with God.

    • Ex: Taking your friend’s pencil without asking

  • Sometimes when we sin, we feel bad about sinning and about hurting others.

    • What do we do when we hurt others?

  • When we sin against God, God is always ready to forgive us!

    • Jesus tells us about God’s mercy and forgiveness in the story of the prodigal son.

  • In this chapter we will be learning about the Sacrament of Reconciliation or Penance.

    • By celebrating reconciliation/penance, we are telling God that we are sorry for our sins, we confess our sins to a priest, and we fix our relationship with God.

    • God will always forgive our sins if we are sorry, totally and completely.

  • What do we do when we get into a fight with our friends?

    • We tell them that we are sorry and we can give them a hug or a small gift to make up for fighting.

    • When we make up with someone, we come back together again. This is called reconciliation.

    • Now when we sin against God, we can’t give Him a hug or a gift, but we still have to ask for forgiveness.

    • When we do small sins, we can pray to God for forgiveness, but for big sins we have to go to confession!

    • Kids Explain First Reconciliation - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t1gQgDQXGAg

  • We can always come back to God and ask for forgiveness in the sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation

    • In this sacrament we receive and celebrate God’s forgiveness and God

    • We think about what we have said and done. We are sorry for the times we have not loved God and others.

    • We meet with the priest.

    • We listen to a story from the Bible about God’s forgiveness.

    • We talk to the priest about what we have done. We tell God we are sorry.

    • The priest shares God’s forgiveness with us.

    • It might be awhile before you celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation, but we can always pray to God and ask for his forgiveness.

  • Jesus told his followers that it is important to forgive others. Jesus asks all of us to be forgiving. He wants us to share God’s peace.

  • We can ask the Holy Spirit to help us to be loving and forgiving
