Chapter 19- We Celebrate God's Forgiveness
Opening Prayer: 1 Hail Mary
Background
What happens when we are baptized? (Our sins are forgiven and we are given the freedom to live as children of God)
Sometimes we use this freedom to make wrong choices. These choices will sometimes hurt others and yourselves. But it also causes our relationship with God to get weaker. These wrong choices are called sins.
Mortal sin: mortal sin is a big sin that breaks your relationship with God.
Ex: Disrespecting your mom and dad
Venial sin: venial sin is a small sin that weakens your relationship with God.
Ex: Taking your friend’s pencil without asking
Sometimes when we sin, we feel bad about sinning and about hurting others.
What do we do when we hurt others?
When we sin against God, God is always ready to forgive us!
Jesus tells us about God’s mercy and forgiveness in the story of the prodigal son.
In this chapter we will be learning about the Sacrament of Reconciliation or Penance.
By celebrating reconciliation/penance, we are telling God that we are sorry for our sins, we confess our sins to a priest, and we fix our relationship with God.
God will always forgive our sins if we are sorry, totally and completely.
What do we do when we get into a fight with our friends?
We tell them that we are sorry and we can give them a hug or a small gift to make up for fighting.
When we make up with someone, we come back together again. This is called reconciliation.
Now when we sin against God, we can’t give Him a hug or a gift, but we still have to ask for forgiveness.
When we do small sins, we can pray to God for forgiveness, but for big sins we have to go to confession!

We can always come back to God and ask for forgiveness in the sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation
In this sacrament we receive and celebrate God’s forgiveness and God
We think about what we have said and done. We are sorry for the times we have not loved God and others.
We meet with the priest.
We listen to a story from the Bible about God’s forgiveness.
We talk to the priest about what we have done. We tell God we are sorry.
The priest shares God’s forgiveness with us.
It might be awhile before you celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation, but we can always pray to God and ask for his forgiveness.
Jesus told his followers that it is important to forgive others. Jesus asks all of us to be forgiving. He wants us to share God’s peace.
We can ask the Holy Spirit to help us to be loving and forgiving

Chapter 18: We are followers of Jesus
Vocabulary: Peacemaker: a person who works for peace
We Gather
Jesus is the Light of the world
Think about things that give us light. (Sun, Flashlights, Candles etc)
How do they help us?
We Believe
Read along from the Gospel of John “ One day Jesus..”
We believe that Jesus is the light of the world.
Jesus:
Helps us to see what God’s love is like.
Shares God’s life with us.
Wants us to follow him.
If we follow him, we will have life with God.
What are some ways you can follow Jesus?
(Optional class activity if time permits): Draw a picture to show that Jesus is the Light of the World.
When we are baptized, we receive the light of Christ.
We are told to “Walk always as children of the light”
As children of the the light, we are followers of Jesus and we should:
Believe in Jesus
Act as Jesus wants us to
Love one another
We show others the light of Christ when we:
Help our family and friends
Share what we have with others
Care about the way others feel
Based on the examples above, how can you show others that you have received the light of the Church?
Jesus asks us to share his peace.
Jesus wanted his followers to be at peace. He:
Wanted them to live in God’s love.
Wanted them to get along with one another.
Wanted them to show love for one another.
Jesus wanted us to work for peace (Peacemakers).
We are peacemakers when we say and do kind things for others.
We can work for peace by trying to get along with everyone.
We can make choices as children of God.
Think about some choices you made yesterday. (What game did you decide to play?/ What snack did you choose?, What other choices did you make?)
God loves us very much and he made each and every one of us to be different from the rest of his creation. That is something that makes us special.
We make choices every single day.
Sometimes we can make a choice without thinking about them.
But God wants us to think about the things we say and do.
God would like us to:
Choose to love him and others
Choose to do what Jesus taught us.
Let’s take a look at this example. Which picture shows Tomas making a loving choice?
Chapter 20: Lent
Opening Prayer: Our Father
We Believe
Lent is a special time in the church.
During Lent we prepare for Jesus’ death and resurrection
We remember all that Jesus has done for us
Lent is also a time where we remember our Baptism
As we mentioned in last week’s lesson, One of the things we receive is grace (The gift of God’s life)
During Lent we thank and praise Jesus for sharing his life with us
During Lent we try to grow closer to Jesus. We:
Pray
Follow his example
Thank God for his great love
Celebrate God’s forgiveness
Help people who are sick, hungry, and lonely
Although, as followers of Jesus Christ we should always do these things. However, they have a bigger and special meaning when we do these actions during Lent.

Chapter 17: The Church Welcomes New Members
Opening Prayer: Our Father
Vocabulary:
Baptism: The sacrament in which we become children of God and members of the Church
Grace: God’s life in us
We Believe
The Church welcomes new members at Baptism
In the picture we can see that Father Marcos and the whole parish are welcoming the Stanik family.
They are bringing their baby Leo to celebrate the sacrament of Baptism.
During his baptism, leo will become a child of God and a new member of the church.
Baptism is the very first sacrament that we receive.
Just like Leo, when we were baptized, we also became the children of God and members of the church.
Our parish family also welcome us into the Catholic Church.
We can only receive the sacrament of Baptism once. Some people get baptized when they are babies. Others get baptized when they are older as older children, teenagers, and adults.
Adults are usually baptized at a celebration the night before Easter Sunday.
At Baptism we receive God’s life.
Water is an important sign of Baptism
Holy Water is water that has been blessed by a priest. The priest traces a cross over the water with his hand. He says a special prayer. Holy water is kept in a special container in the church.
During Baptism we are placed in water, or water is poured on us
The baptism takes place in a special place in the church. This special place is called the baptismal font or pool.
Water gives us a sign of the life that God gives us.
At baptism God gives us a share in his life (Grace)
We say and do special things to celebrate Baptism
The Church celebrates Baptism with special words and actions
Read along: Leo’s baptism
In Baptism we are joined to jesus and one another
Read Along: A white garment…
These same words and actions were part of the celebration of your baptism too!
As baptized members of the church we help one another to follow jesus. We share in God;s life together and we share our beliefs.
